Week 2

During this week, I ended up needing to change the goal of my project a bit. Because I've been trying to work on my webcomic, The Kava Cauldron, and my senior project simultaneously, I realized it would make more sense (for the health of my hands) to combine the comic with my environment drawings for this project since they both revolve around drawing skills and creating a complete product. After talking with my advisor, I focused mostly on my comic this week so that I can finish episode 8 by Monday.

I co-create The Kava Cauldron with my friend Sarah, who draws most of the line art. After she finishes with the lines, she sends them to me and I add colors, backgrounds, shading, and letters. This episode didn't have a big need for detailed backgrounds, so I focused more on the colors and finding ways to create simple backgrounds. The city art I used was actually from a few episodes ago, I just changed the colors to make it work for nighttime. I did create another background for the inside of the penthouse but ended up ditching it because it didn't work as well as simple patterns. Any practice I get is good though, whether or not I use it in the final product.

I tried out a new shading method for episode 8 and I'm kind of struggling to tell if it's any better than what I've done for the other episodes. The only difference is that I'm using the paintbrush tool instead of the lasso fill tool to shade, so it doesn't look all that different from before. One of my goals with this comic and Clip Studio Paint (the software I used to make it) is that I try out something new each episode, whether I'm using something I learned from a tutorial/tip online or trying to copy something I see in another comic.

After working on this episode, I really want to improve my shading style and color choices, and I also want to get better at drawing indoor backgrounds because I find them really difficult still.

If you want to check out the work I did this week, episode 8 of The Kava Cauldron will go up Monday the 31st: The Kava Cauldron on WEBTOONS

  1. Patina: Your magna/zine/webtoon is my new favorite media to read. The art style is amazing and captures everything I love about the medium (actually it's very reminiscent of the amazing LGBTQ+ Netflix She-ra reboot for some reason). Also I absolutely LOVE how you're using the space of the scrolling web page as a way to build tension, suspense, and mood throughout. I'm floored and am left aphasic. Brava!!!

  2. You are wise to think of how to make the work sustainable for your hands--better to think of the long haul when it comes to ergonomics and health. I also find it so interesting to learn more about the problem solving as well as the collaborative process that goes into creating this art.

  4. Patina, it makes so much sense to combine these two projects. I'm impressed by your technical learning in addition to your creativity. And I want to know what soup that is in those bowls. Maybe I'll find it in the Kava Cauldron!
