Week 4

Image
For the first part of the week, I mainly focused on studying from my art books (Tokyo Storefronts and Tokyo at Night by Mateusz Urbanowicz) and my favorite process videos (particularly this one , a gorgeous illustration of a futuristic megacity done in photoshop.) From them, I was able to get a better sense of architecture, lighting, and how to capture more industrial textures with digital brushes.  In the later part of the week, I primarily working on coloring the pride months illustration for The Kava Cauldron. Coloring is typically less physically strenuous than drawing line art, so it was easier on my hands that way. It was also nice to get to try out some new lighting techniques on Clip Studio Paint since I usually don't have the time to do that for every panel of the comic. Figuring out how to put the flags' colors into their outfits was a very fun challenge, and so was figuring out how to keep the colors from clashing. Overall, I actually thought it turned out really cut...

Week 3 (was meant to go up earlier)

This week I finished up my work on episode 8 of The Kava Cauldron and uploaded it, then continued working on my downtown Portland illustration. I was feeling really under the weather most of this week and my hand was hurting, so I was a lot less productive than I had intended to be. Still, it always feels nice to publish an episode, so that was a nice way to start the week.  I had a lot of trouble with this particular section of the Portland illustration. While it may have been partially due to me not feeling well, I actually don't think that was the real problem. One thing I learned through this project, especially this week, is that Procreate, the program I used for this particular piece, might not have been the best tool for such a detailed illustration.  Procreate is a great program, used by professional artists and beginners alike, but I think its limits become apparent when you need a lot of detail (pixels) and a lot of layers. Because my drawing has so many pixels, I ca...

Week 2

During this week, I ended up needing to change the goal of my project a bit. Because I've been trying to work on my webcomic, The Kava Cauldron , and my senior project simultaneously, I realized it would make more sense (for the health of my hands) to combine the comic with my environment drawings for this project since they both revolve around drawing skills and creating a complete product. After talking with my advisor, I focused mostly on my comic this week so that I can finish episode 8 by Monday. I co-create The Kava Cauldron with my friend Sarah, who draws most of the line art. After she finishes with the lines, she sends them to me and I add colors, backgrounds, shading, and letters. This episode didn't have a big need for detailed backgrounds, so I focused more on the colors and finding ways to create simple backgrounds. The city art I used was actually from a few episodes ago, I just changed the colors to make it work for nighttime. I did create another background for ...

Week 1

For my senior project, I am creating a small series of environment drawings. I chose this project for a number of reasons, but the biggest one was because I really love to draw environments but rarely have time to do anything very detailed because I spend most of my free time working on my comic and we have a monthly upload schedule to stick to. Because I was already really familiar with them, the drawing programs I'm using for my project are Procreate and Clip Studio Paint on my iPad. I will likely use Clip Studio Paint on my Surface Book computer to draw, as well. For drawing references, I'll be using a lot of the same resources I use to help me draw backgrounds for The Kava Cauldron (my comic). I use YouTube and Pinterest a lot, but I also have a couple of art books by some of my favorite background animators Makoto Shinkai and Mateusz Urbanowicz with some really beautiful illustrations and drawing tips. The gorgeous environments I've seen in animation and comics are re...
