Week 1

For my senior project, I am creating a small series of environment drawings. I chose this project for a number of reasons, but the biggest one was because I really love to draw environments but rarely have time to do anything very detailed because I spend most of my free time working on my comic and we have a monthly upload schedule to stick to.

Because I was already really familiar with them, the drawing programs I'm using for my project are Procreate and Clip Studio Paint on my iPad. I will likely use Clip Studio Paint on my Surface Book computer to draw, as well. For drawing references, I'll be using a lot of the same resources I use to help me draw backgrounds for The Kava Cauldron (my comic). I use YouTube and Pinterest a lot, but I also have a couple of art books by some of my favorite background animators Makoto Shinkai and Mateusz Urbanowicz with some really beautiful illustrations and drawing tips. The gorgeous environments I've seen in animation and comics are really what got me into drawing environments in the first place, so these books are particularly special to me.

My main goals for this project are to gain more skills and experience in drawing environments, create a small collection of work that displays my abilities, and get a better sense of if this type of work is something I might like to do as a real job in the future.

So far, I've been working on a drawing based off of a photo of downtown Portland my dad sent me.

This is the work I've done so far:

And this is the photo it's based on:

  1. Patina, it's fascinating to watch the forms take shape! There is an emotional quality to these drawings, an atmosphere that makes me feel things when I look at them. I guess that's the point, yes? I'm very impressed!

    1. Thank you, Bill! It's really nice to see the my art has a strong emotional atmosphere. Because this is a drawing of a real place and I usually draw imaginary places, it's been interesting for me to try to express the mood of a real environment that I've actually been to. I'm glad you like it!

  2. Patina, these are excellent drawings. I like the cloud/fog/water texture of the Broadway bridge piece. It feels like Portland. I hope that you have enough time to get into the flow of your creativity with this project.

  3. I love getting to see your work as a visual artist! I agree with Bill - there is a wonderful moodiness you have captured in these pictures - I really get the sense of a cloudy/foggy Portland day and the sensations that evokes.

    1. Thanks, Elizabeth! The way that the original picture captured what a cloudy Portland day feels like is exactly what made me want to draw it and try to recreate the feeling myself.
